So a bit less than a year ago, my publisher, Bryan Borland, suggested that the poet Christopher Gaskins and I interview each other regarding our first full-length collections of poetry, each being published in October 2013 by Sibling Rivalry Press. He sent each of us a copy of the other's book. Christopher's book is titled Boys Have Been . . . and mine is Purpose and Devil Piss (in case you didn't know that by now). Over a period of approximately three months, Christopher and I proceeded to read and dissect each other's books, e-mailing questions and responses back and forth. By the end of this process, we ended up with a thirty-two-page interview. Christopher then sent this monster of an interview to Bryan so that he could review it and possibly edit it down. Bryan got William Johnson over at Lambda Literary interested in eventually posting it on the Lambda site, but it needed to be edited down to three pages. Yes--three pages! Magically editing took place and the interview (or conversation) was made dramatically shorter for it's debut on Lambda Literary. Now, a year later and a year since our books were first released, this edited version of our interview is up on Lambda. If you are at all interested in reading it (as a teaser, the words "horror," "freak," "cock," and "roller-skate" show up in my responses), then get your hand on that mouse and click here: http://www.lambdaliterary.org/features/10/28/in-conversation-christopher-gaskins-and-robert-siek/.
And here are the photos of me and Christopher Gaskins that accompany the interview, just to provide some visuals.
I was at the Austin Psych Fest when my photos was taken, which is why I'm wearing a hat; the sun was brutal and I didn't want a burnt scalp. I don't know where Christopher was when his photo was taken; I suspect somewhere in Florida where he now lives.
And here is the cover image of Christopher's book.
Purple is my favorite color. I really dig the painting that was used on his cover.
I'm not posting the cover image from my book again. I believe I've posted at least twice already on this blog.
So after all of that, I wanted to add that a few weeks from now I'm going to begin posting the aforementioned full thirty-two page interview (or conversation) between me and Christopher in sections on this blog. I doubt anyone will actually want to read the entire thing, but what the hell do I know. We worked hard on the damn thing, so it deserves to appear somewhere in it's insane entirety. Perhaps two weeks from now I'll post the first five or so pages of it. At least I'll have something to post on my blog for a while, other than updates on the Newfangled reading I curate.
